Bowls came to Foxton in the early 1950s when the villagers decided that it would be nice to have their own bowls club, so the hunt began to find a suitable site on which to lay the green. The problem was solved when the local cricket club wanted the football area on the recreation ground moved away from the cricket square; when that was down, it was found that there was just enough room for a bowling green.

The tall trees in that area of the recreation ground needed felling and then Fowlmere farmers Bill Smith and Frank Rayner came and used their farm equipment to level the ground so it was possible to lay the green. By 1956 the green was ready.  As there was no pavilion, refreshments were served at the White Horse at first, until a caravan was purchased, which served its purpose until the current pavilion was built.

While the green was being laid the owner of The Bury in Foxton allowed one of the lawns at his home to be used for bowls.
