The Plague House, Landbeach Print E-mail

35 High Street, Landbeach is known as the Plague House.

It got its name because, according to legend, two old ladies running away from the Great Plague of London settled there. The Great Plague of London was a bubonic plague epidemic in 1664-5 that killed over 70,000 of the 460,000 population of London. Having settled in Landbeach the old ladies fell ill with the plague and died, having already passed the plague on to the Rector and his family, who were the only people to go near them. It is certain that the Rector's son died in the plague year and the Rector the following year, but there is no trace of the old ladies.
